The figures speak for us, because...

the Rhine-Alpine Corridor is the rail freight corridor with the highest volume of traffic in Europe. In transalpine freight traffic between Northern Europe and Italy via Switzerland, rail freight traffic has a market share of 70%. Our combined transport accounts for 50%.

• we cause five times less CO2 emissions than the equivalent of road transport

and

• the transport of passengers and goods generates external costs of around 1 trillion euros per year in the EU. Passenger traffic accounts for 70% and freight traffic for 30% (300 billion euros). With almost 83%, road is the biggest cause of costs for freight transport, rail transport is the weakest with 2% next to river transport (according to a recent study by the EU Commission).
